Yeah, yeah, I know that this is Nike’s slogan. I also know that it’s a concept and a rallying cry that’s been blogged about over and over and over again. And yes, I know it’s a tired topic.
So why have I chosen it as the topic for my first post? Mostly because, tired as it is, it still remains excellent advice. Case in point: last week I had a conversation with a friend about this very topic. She was telling me about how she had heard Seth Godin speak at the eBay Live conference, and she mentioned that at one point in the speech, Seth revealed what he claimed was his best business idea. “I can do this,” he said, “because I know all of you are too lazy to do it.”
That thought took be aback, not because of how bold it was, but because of how true it is. I’ve heard a lot of great ideas in my few short years, but I have yet to act on any of them. Why? I always come up with some excuse. Too expensive. Too untested. Too much work. In the end, I’m not willing to invest the elbow grease, sweat, money, and passion to make the idea happen. And the idea goes to someone else who is willing.
So I have decided that the time has come for me to roll my sleeves up and tackle some of the ideas that I’ve been kicking around for a long time. I hope that in doing so I’ll learn some lessons, have a few failures, and have a lot of success. And I hope you’ll come along with me for the ride. And in the meantime…
Just do it.
